Embracing a Healthy Lifestyle in Later Life: It’s Never Too Late to Reap the Benefits
Adopting healthy habits—even later in life—can significantly improve longevity, according to a recent study published by JAMA Network Open in June 2024. This research, focused on 5,222 Super Agers (people aged 80 and above), reveals that key lifestyle choices can greatly impact how long we live. And the best part? It’s never too late to start.
Healthy Habits that Boost Longevity
The study evaluated participants’ lifestyles on a scale of zero to six, with higher scores indicating healthier habits. Key factors included diet diversity, consistent physical activity, smoking cessation, alcohol intake, and maintaining a healthy body mass index (BMI). Super Agers who scored highest (5 or 6) lived the longest, with many reaching the age of 100. Those with lower scores (0 to 2) had significantly shorter lifespans.
So, what are the most important habits for longevity?
- Balanced, nutrient-rich diet: Super Agers who reached 100 years of age consumed plenty of fruits, vegetables, legumes, fish, and tea—foods known for their anti-inflammatory and longevity-boosting benefits.
- Regular physical activity: Staying active was key. Whether through walking, running, or practicing qi gong (a gentle form of exercise that promotes balance and flexibility), Super Agers made movement a priority.
- Non-smoking: Avoiding smoking was one of the most critical factors contributing to a longer, healthier life.
Interestingly, alcohol consumption and BMI had less impact on longevity than these three core habits.
It’s Never Too Late to Start Healthy Habits
Although the study didn’t account for participants’ lifestyles when they were younger, the results show that even making changes later in life can have a profound effect on health. Whether it’s improving your diet, becoming more active, or quitting smoking, the benefits of healthier choices can add not only years to your life but life to your years.
For those who think it’s too late to make a change, the message is clear: You can still create a positive impact on your health and longevity at any age. By incorporating small, manageable habits daily, your body can respond in remarkable ways.
Longevity Tips for Super Agers
In addition to diet, exercise, and non-smoking, here are some other tips to help Super Agers live longer and feel great:
- Stay socially connected: Isolation can have detrimental effects on health. Keeping in touch with friends and family, joining clubs, or participating in group activities can foster emotional well-being and reduce stress.
- Prioritize sleep: Quality rest is crucial. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night to allow the body to regenerate and maintain optimal health.
- Manage stress: Chronic stress can lead to health problems such as heart disease and weakened immunity. Regularly practice mindfulness, meditation, or yoga to reduce stress and boost mental clarity.
- Lifelong learning: Keeping the brain stimulated with new activities, puzzles, or learning opportunities can improve cognitive health and may lower the risk of dementia.
